"Through this course people with diverse views can explore them amicably."

"I learnt how to think and examine issues differently, about others views and how they think about questions in different ways, of gaps, in my knowledge and understanding of other religions and about new and engaging training techniques"

"So much about myself and others perceptions. I also gained confidence to voice my personal opinions and appreciate others."

Equality Act 2010

What are your responsibilities? Who does it protect?

The Equality Act brings together nine separate pieces of legislation into one single Act simplifying the law and strengthening it in important ways to help tackle discrimination and inequality.

Who has responsibilities?

The Act applies to all organisations that provide a service to the public or a section of the public (service providers). It also applies to anyone who sells goods or provides facilities. It applies to all your services, whether or not a charge is made for them. It also applies to employees and volunteers who work for an organisation whether they are paid or unpaid.

Who is protected?

The Act protects people from discrimination on the basis of 'protected characteristics' (these used to be called 'grounds'). The relevant characteristics for services and public functions are:

  • Disability (definition changed)
  • Gender reassignment (definition changed)
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race – this includes ethnic or national origins, colour and nationality
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex, and
  • Sexual orientation.
  • Age
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
